Lo Paller del Coc. Surp.

Christmas at Victorian Broadmoor

Voices from Broadmoor

Twas the night before Christmas (1869), when patient D. M. decided that not even the prospect of currant cake the following day was enough to keep him at Broadmoor. As much of the asylum slept, he carefully removed the iron bar from his window, placed it onto his bed, and escaped into the dark, cold December night.

Christmas at Broadmoor was, in many ways, no different to any other time at the asylum. In addition to escapes, there were reported instances of violence and abuse towards staff and patients, petitions for discharge were still made, and some patients still complained about their treatment and alleged wrongful confinement. Yet, at the same time, there is evidence that for some, life was, if only for a few days, a little bit better.

For some patients, December meant more visitors. In early December, the friend of one patient pleaded with the Superintendent…

Novedad Literaria: Sofía y el Ángel Caído de Ramón Somoza. Una extraordinaria historia de amor.

Just Olga

Breakfast for today: Pumpkin Blueberry Bread in a Bowl

The Adventures of a Dainty Nacho

Pumpkin and Blueberry Bread in a bowl. Pumpkin and Blueberry Bread in a bowl.

I love breakfast! It is my favourite meal of the day and occasionally have breakfast for dinner. No matter how hard I try I can’t figure out how some people can start their day with just a coffee or nothing until coffee break or even lunch, especially while farming. My tummy just yells in protest if I think about skipping breakfast! I spent a few months WOOF’ing on a tiny farm in St. Christaud in the SW of France when I first travelled around Europe. Breakfast there, thankfully was a full affair and it got me hooked on beginning my day with oats. We would all sit down together in the back garden after feeding the chickens and have a bowl of hot/cold milk adding oats, raisins, chocolate or what ever you wanted to the mix with a slab of Johanna’s homemade bread…

“Cherry Wine”
Her eyes and words are so icy
Oh but she burns
Like rum on the fire
Hot and fast and angry
As she can be
I walk my days on a wire

It looks ugly, but it’s clean
Oh mamma, don’t fuss over me

[Chorus:]
The way she tells me I’m hers and she is mine
Open hand or closed fist would be fine
The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine

Calls of guilty thrown at me
All while she stains
The sheets of some other
Thrown at me so powerfully
Just like she throws with the arm of her brother

But I want it, it’s a crime
That she’s not around most of the time

[Chorus:]
Way she shows me I’m hers and she…
