Grant Green. Career. Infuences. Style.

Recording prolifically and mainly for Blue Note Records as both leader and sideman, Green performed in the hard bop, soul jazz, bebopand Latin-tinged idioms throughout his career.

Critics Michael Erlewine and Ron Wynn write, “A severely underrated player during his lifetime, Grant Green is one of the great unsung heroes of jazz guitar … Green’s playing is immediately recognizable – perhaps more than any other guitarist.” Critic Dave Hunter described his sound as “lithe, loose, slightly bluesy and righteously groovy”. He often performed in an organ trio, a small group with an organ and drummer.

Apart from guitarist Charlie Christian, Green’s primary influences were saxophonists, particularly Charlie Parker, and his approach was therefore almost exclusively linear rather than chordal. O desh ke dhurandharon,

Is desh ki bhi socho,

Durdin ke badlon mein,

Hinsa ka nritya dekho.

Kathinaiyon se joojh ke,

Ye desh hai kya laya?

Peeda ke ghonsle mein,

Ashru pakshi chahchahaya.

Kanya ki upasna kar,

Kanya ka dar ghataya,

Aatank ke khet mein,

Navjeevan hai lahlahaya.

Chaand par Jane ka sapna,

Machinery saakar kar rahi,

Dharti par manhgayi chitkar bhar rahi.

Jativad ki aag me, medha dhadhak raha hai,

Jhooth ka daaman thaam, kyun sach sisak raha hai?

Upyuktata ka upyukt aadhar jaa raha hai,

Sadachar k rangmanch par,

Vyabhichar chaa raha hai.

Hai raavano ke aashwasan,

Ram rajya aa raha hai, ram rajya aa raha hai.

dawn breaking

Scribbled Verse

dawn breaking.

1.

willowy brushstrokes,

conjured sketches,
painted,

etched,

embossed,
hewn between forgotten morns,
waking,

splintering,

straining, against each other,
ceaseless,

relentless,

endless,
empty,

a vacuum,
an abyss of night.

2.

still,

hope blazes,
bright,

radiant,

smiling,
though measured,

disciplined,
while embracing,

enveloping,
and always

surrendering to the eternal promise,
raging,

hungering,

aching,

the promise of a new dawn breaking.
